Mandarin ducks, also called lovebirds, symbolize love, romance and family happiness. In the wild the ducks often mate for life and have strong familial bonds. In the practice of Feng Shui, a depiction of the ducks, either painting or carving, is said to encourage the love in your life. To specifically enhance romance it is said that placing the lovebirds in the southwest corner of a home with a vase of fresh cut flowers will stimulate the appropriate energy. Considering that China is the most populous country on earth, there must be something to it.

NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, offers thousands of limited edition and one-of-a-kind gifts, jewelry, and home decor treasures handmade by master artists and artisans throughout the world. Sitting sideways under a great feathered headdress, the Maya priest intones songs of prayer as he carries out the ceremonial ritual. His image is present at the Yaxchilan archeological site in Chiapas and is now faithfully replicated by Ernesto and Erik Basilio in ceramic. The plate's brim is covered by glyphs that recall the Maya iconography adorning temples throughout southern Mexico as well as Central America. Artisan Info: Born in 1928, don Ernesto Basilio Vergara and his son, Erik Basilio Solano, have 40 years of artisan tradition. Ernesto began as an apprentice to the Aragon family, who arrived from Germany at the end of the 19th century. A renowned master craftsman, he has perfected his ceramic technique while enriching his life with the study of Mexico's pre-Hispanic cultures. He applies the ancient icons to all of his works. His son Erik, born in 1967, has learned from his father and brings his own talent to this family tradition. Their work begins with the raw materials, a special kind of clay brought in blocks from the state of Oaxaca. Finely ground, it is blended with other kinds of clay to form an extremely strong medium, resistant to heat and impact. The Basilios shape the pieces in molds and high-fire them at 2,200F. Only perfect pieces pass their strict standards

Preseasoned and measures 16 3/4" x 11 1/4". Comes with the Old Mountain care instructions. Cleaning: After cooking in your Old Mountain cookware, it can be cleaned by putting in hot water and bringing to a boil. Never use detergent to clean seasoned cookware, as it will remove the seasoning: Also, avoid putting hot cast iron into cold water. This can cause cast iron to warp or crack. After pouring out boiling water, wipe dry with a paper towel. If something sticks to the surface, dislodge it by simply using a spoon. Do not use any abrasive item to scrub cookware. Again, this can cut into seasoned surface. While pan is still warm from washing, apply a fine coating of oil or spray on all surfaces. If metallic taste or signs of rust are noticed, simply wash with hot, soapy water. Scour off the rust, and then reseason your cookware. Store your cast iron cookware in a cool dry location. If storing with lid, place a paper towel between the lid and base to allow circulation of air. Seasoning: This is a simple process of oil absorbing into into the pores of your iron cookware leaving a black, nonstick surface. Follow instructions below if your Old Mountain cookware ever requires reseasoning. 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Wash cast iron with hot, soapy water, and a stiff brush. Rinse and dry. 3. Completely coat inside and outside surfaces with melted vegetable oil or shortening (some people prefer lard) or bacon fat). 4. Place cookware on middle rack for 30 minutes. Remove cookware and wipe it almost dry to prevent pooling of shortening or oil. Place back in oven for another 30 minutes Essential for any kitchen, Old Mountain cast iron cookware heats evenly, retains the heat, and is more versatile than any other type of cookware available. Cast iron will fry, saut?, grill, roast, stew, bake, as well as the guarantee of an Old Mountain skillet to keep the orneriest of husbands in line!

The Lotus flower is a symbol of purity and peace. As a design motif in Oriental arts, the lotus is prominent throughout Asia. The hardy water plant grows in adverse conditions, including badly polluted waters. Therefore it is seen as a purifying element. It's lush green leaves and stunning white or pink flowers rise from dark murky pools, symbolizing that life's goodness can arise from the darkest part of the soul. That is why the Buddha, the Kwan Yin and other Buddhist deities, are often pictured with a Lotus blossom. This pattern of interlocking lotus leaves and flowers on REORIENT'S decorative plate is hand painted in deep green shades with patches of blue water. At the center is a small bird, which completes another common theme in Asian art, the balance of Yin and Yang. While the Lotus is anchored, the bird can fly freely, creating a Taoist symmetry.
